ENDANG BUNKO

A small library newly built within a elementary school yard of a village on the north coast of the Indonesian island of Java.
Although most of the buildings in the area have tiled floors and the classrooms in a school are furnished with desks and chairs for children, local people usually sit on the floor at home the same as before.
We designed an uneven “floor intimacy” with level differences under the condition where the building should be constructed by the local craftsmen using the materials available locally and most easily.
This is a small space for children skilled in finding their own place to come across books and enjoy them at their respective places.
